Art & SoulWork...‘begins with the assumption that a human being is a world of meanings, emotions, dreams, wishes, fears, a past, a cultural milieu, and an interior life of thought and fantasy – in short, a soul,’ and is based on the idea that ‘creativity is being in the world soulfully, for the only thing we truly make, whether in the arts, in culture or at home, is soul. (Thomas Moore).It embraces practices that facilitate presence and creativity and draw on our potential such as art-making, working with colour, movement, music, writing, meditation, silence and reflection. All of these have been beneficial companions on my own journey and I would like to offer them to you here. This can be in a counselling session, a workshop, a talk, an art class or through a painting.

Soul Art SOUL ARTSoul Art is concerned with the ‘inner’ rather than the ‘outer,’ using intuition rather than intellectual understanding as its main source of insight. Although it can be pleasant to the eye and stimulating for the mind, appearance and thought are not relevant, they can even get in the way. What matters most is the artist’s openness and presence to what is and a willingness to be guided by the creative process rather than taking control of it. In this approach to art we look for a deeper and wider perception of reality that transcends the physical world, our views and ideas, likes and dislikes, and connects us to the essence of Being. It is the artist’s presence to their personal experience that builds a bridge between the physical manifestation and the spiritual essence of a particular subject and invites these dimensions into the work. The aim is to capture beauty that comes from within and convey truth that goes beyond fact and reason. Colour COLOURColour is most important to me, it gives music to the picture. The different tones create the timbre of the composition of shapes, and the composition of shapes gives the colour its rhythm. A dark colour plucks a different string in our soul than a bright one. We cannot help but feel about colour as we cannot help but feel about music. It is a bridge to our emotions, a direct line to the deep experiences of our life that resonate with what we see. Colour has no beginning and no end, it has no shape, it keeps flowing and changing. It seems to have a life of its own and it is fascinating to watch what it does once it is on the canvas; the way its hue changes next to other colours or blending in with other colours, how it expresses itself being poured into different shapes and the way it creates depth and light on a flat surface. I often find an image hidden behind colours that I spread on the canvas, as if the colour palette was a sea of images and the brush a fishing rod that pulls out whatever it can catch in the depth.

Counselling COUNSELLING Whether we suffer from anxiety, depression or low self-esteem, are stressed or bored with what we do, find ourselves confronted with illness, the breakdown of a relationship or the loss of a loved one, all suffering contains within it an opportunity to heal our wounding, get a stronger sense of ourselves and move on to a place that allows us to engage with life more fully and meet its challenges with more confidence and compassion for ourselves and others. I am here to support you in this process. I am trained in Psychosynthesis, a holistic training that is accredited by BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and validated by UEL (University of East London). I’m a member of BACP and abide by the BACP guidelines for good practice.

Psychosynthesis PSYCHOSYNTHESISThe Holistic ApproachPsychosynthesis is a holistic approach to human development that was established by the Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli (1888-1974). It works with the body, mind and feelings and as a transpersonal psychology looks at the individual’s spiritual potential as well as their past experiences to understand current issues. As a theory and practice Psychosynthesis supports a synthesis, a coming together, of the various parts of an individual's personality into a more cohesive self. This development is understood as part of a natural evolutionary process, a process that constantly urges us to bring more of our potential into being and let go of what no longer serves us. Like the seed becomes a flower and ceases to be a seed simply by following its own nature, we become who we are simply by tuning into the natural flow of our lives. In Psychosynthesis the human psyche is often depicted as an “Egg-Diagram” (see picture) to illustrate its different components and how they relate to each other.In the centre we find the “I”, our identity, surrounded by what we are aware of at any given moment. The middle unconscious represents the psychological content that is not immediately present but can be easily recalled (like remembering what our favorite meal is). The upper and the lower part of the egg represent the unconscious that is more difficult to access: The lower unconscious contains repressed material from the past, experiences we find too painful to remember, the higher unconscious holds our potential, parts of ourselves we have not yet developed.According to Psychosynthesis there is a tendency in human beings to become more conscious, to become more of who they are. This tendency to grow, expand and develop is motivated and directed by the Higher Self that in the diagram sits on top of the egg. It represents our source of inspiration and guidance, of wisdom and creativity that pulls us towards resolving old conflicts and realizing our potential. Inner joy and peace is generated in a personality where the “I” is conscious and free enough to listen to the Higher Self and follow its call. If the connection is blocked or distorted and we ‘forget’ who we are, we experience conflict and pain. Sometimes life creates events that bring up these unresolved conflicts. If we start listening again, listening to our experiences and the voice within them that calls us towards more freedom and choice, we get a chance to heal and move on.The task of Psychosynthesis counselling and therapy is to support this process. It is a joint undertaking between the counsellor and the client that raises awareness of what is, helps release painful feelings and invites in authentic change that is motivated by the client’s own inner wisdom. About Me From Creativity to PsychologyMy professional career began in 1985 as a commercial artist in Germany where I was born. After having worked in advertising for 7 years an increasing desire for a deeper understanding of human nature led me into psychology. I enrolled at the University of Bremen, Germany where I graduated with an MA in Psychology in 1999. My main areas of study were psychodynamic theories that explain who we are out of the formative years of childhood. They never managed to give me a satisfactory answer to what enables personal growth after that. How can we become more than we are, if what we have learned to be is all there is? From Psychology to SpiritualityMy practice as a singer in a jazz duo opened up another avenue to explore. When singing I had recurring experiences of being plugged into an energy that seemed to lift me out of myself yet made me completely one with myself. I stopped making music and started being music. There was no separation between me, the song and the audience. Expanding beyond my ordinary self I became most creative with the least effort. In these moments I experienced the spiritual dimension of creativity that inspired subsequent explorations. After university I decided to leave Germany for a voluntary year at a retreat centre in London. At the centre I met an artist who encouraged me to take up painting and introduced me to Quakers. I got interested in the Quaker spiritual practice of ‘listening within’. It reminded me of the healing gift of silence and inner stillness I had experienced on silent meditation retreats before. I regularly attended Quaker meetings for over 10 years alongside an expanding painting practice.From Spirituality to PsychosynthesisFrom 2002 until 2006 I trained as a Psychosynthesis counsellor at PET (Psychosynthesis & Education Trust) in London, a transpersonal training that embraces the spiritual as the seat of our potential. According to psychosynthesis we follow an inherent tendency to become fully who we are and get into conflict and pain if that natural flow gets blocked. Psychosynthesis with its great variety of interventions aims to unblock and support the flow of creative energy from the transpersonal.From Psychosynthesis to CreativityDuring my training I discovered the powerful work with imagery. Images are like doorways to our potential. They can unlock transpersonal energy that transforms blocks into stepping stones. Inspired by this I started painting much closer to my personal experience using the images that emerged as a creative guide. Studying Transpersonal Arts at the Anthroposophical Tobias School of Art & Therapy in 2010/11 further deepened my practice and my appreciation of colour as a direct reflection of the soul.
